You might find this hard to believe, but there are people out there who have domesticated skunks. That's right.pet skunks! Of course, these owners have their pets' scent glands removed at an early age. That being the case, it is true that the owners claim their pets to be intelligent, playful, and curious. But since most people want to know how to get rid of skunks rather than how to keep them in their homes, there are professionals like me to take care of the situation for you. I am a professional trapper. My wildlife control operators and I run a full-service animal removal service. For a fee, I can provide consultation, coaching, removal, and cleanup. Skunks often take up residence in, around, or under a home or dwelling, like a porch. If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, I highly advise you waste no time in contacting a wildlife control operator. The way I see it, you wouldn't try to weld something if you're not a welder. Nor would you perform surgery if you weren't a surgeon. There truly is more than meets the eye with trapping and skunk removal. For instance:

  • Oftentimes when people try to trap the animal with their own cage, they use unsuitable traps which allow spray to get all over the place. On top of that, once the critter is trapped there's still an animal to deal with. Trapping is the best method, but it must be done right. As a wildlife trapping professional, I have special styles of traps to prevent this from happening, along with other tools and resources to aid the process.

  • Trapping professionals have the know-how to avoid being sprayed during the trapping process, while others may not.

  • The power of skunk smell cannot be underestimated. The molecules in the odor have a way of blanketing and settling into a house or dwelling like a rain cloud. If you wait to take care of this problem, consequences include permanently damaged duct work, furniture, drapes, carpet, clothingyou name it. We have machines and products that remove skunk odor. We have tools to deodorize, neutralize, and emit fragrances that attack the damaging molecules. The longer the odor has a chance to disperse and attach, the harder it will be to eliminate it.

  • When skunk spray gets in a home or in a window well, the standard average cost to take care of it can be between $1500 to $4000. Oftentimes this may not even include insurance costs to replace furnishings, carpets, drapery, etc. Like I said, though, this kind of permanent damage and high cost can be avoided if you call professionals like me as soon as you identify the problem.

  • There are times when people will trap the animal themselves, but then realize the problem has literally multiplied when they discover the offspring that was left behind, or find dead skunks rotting under the porch . As a professional, I know how to get rid of skunks entirely.

On top of the already mentioned consequences of the potent spray, keep in mind that its smell that can permeate a sprayed region for up to one mile. The spray can also burn an attacker's eyes and cause temporary blindness. It's obvious that the spray is a great defensive tactic. But if you can believe it, there are even more reasons to keep these animals off your territory.

For the year 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 1,494 cases of rabies in skunks in the United Statesthis is about 21.5% of reported cases in all species. Theses smelly creatures are diggers and have been known to destroy a garden in no time while looking for bugs and earthworms. They will also spray where they live (under the porch, in a crawl space, under concrete, etc). Many a pet has been affected by this animal's spray and the cleanup is no fun. These critters also like to get into garbage cans because they are omnivores like raccoons . It's for these and perhaps other reasons that humans often want to know how to get rid of them. If you want to know how to get rid of skunks, as stated above, trapping is the best method. There's no need to use lethal trapping means to kill the animal ; you just need a good professional trapper. We also have skunk repellent which is effective in some circumstances. If you question whether or not you need a professional trapper, consider doing so if any of the following situations exist:

  • When the number of the animals in a region rises to unacceptable levels.

  • When the animals have taken up residence in, under, or around a home or dwelling. If you have pets, livestock, or even children who might make the mistake of attacking or frightening the creatures, this is especially true.

  • When public health officials have determined a rabies epidemic in a given area, or when an animal shows signs of being rabid.

While skunks can be considered gentle and passive, no human wants to cross one the wrong way. These animals will spray if they feel threatened or afraid for their lives. Humans who act aggressively towards the animal put themselves at risk. In such cases, the critters can spray up to 15 feet, using a gland located under their tails. So remember that if you see one, avoid raising your hands or smiling. Just lower your head and walk away quietly. There have been reported cases of animals that enter homes through pet doors and then find quiet closets or empty beds in which to spend the night. But again, as long as it does not feel threatened, it won't spray.

So if you cross paths with a creature about the same size of a house cat, with two white stripes down its back, don't panic. Follow the guidelines outlined above, and remember that it takes professional know-how to get rid of skunks.
