Let me tell you about an experience I had recently in my line of work. I am a professional wild animal removal specialist—anything from bats to rats, I remove the unwanted creatures from my clients' homes, and cabins.

I recently helped a woman who had skunks living under her porch. She saw them several nights in a row coming out from their den to eat the peanuts she leaves out for the squirrels and the dry cat food she leaves out for her cat. The skunks were very small and she had not seen the mother around. She wasn't sure what to do, but said she was certain she wanted the skunks removed.

I told her that the mother was most likely trapped or poisoned and the baby skunks were unsure what to do so they were still hanging around the den. The job was fairly simple. I located a small crack under the porch in the foundation where the skunks were going in and out of the crawlspace. Using my specialized traps and expertise, I removed three baby skunks from the area. Then I sealed up the entrance so in the future no skunks or other animals could enter the home again.

I also advised my client that if she would be more careful with the food particles she left around her yard, then wild animals like skunks would be less likely to want to make dens at her home. Skunks especially are always looking for a fast food fix. You certainly don't want your home and yard to be known as the skunk "McDonalds".

On the other hand, controlling the food on your property does not guarantee that wild animals won't choose your home. They may just decide to live at your house and visit the skunk "Burger King" down the street.

Raccoons run around in attic in Towson, Maryland

We've got noises coming from our attic and think that a family of raccoons might be living up there. We start hearing the noises around 10:00 p.m. every night when we are getting ready for bed. It sounds like a bunch of cats or dogs are running around above us. It gets our dogs very excited and they start barking like crazy. Then of course the baby wakes up and cries because of all the noise. We just aren't getting any sleep.

We searched the outside of the house looking for a way for the bandits to get in there. We found some venting pulled away from the house that leads into the attic. So we blocked this with a piece of wood to stop the raccoons from getting back in, but we keep hearing noises up there (and still aren't getting any sleep).

We looked in the attic to see where the coon was, but we couldn't see it as it was daytime and probably sleeping. However, we did see some kind of poop in the attic. (I know, disgusting!)

So we finally called a professional raccoon removal technician and he came out. He said that we did one of the worst things that we could do. (Gulp!) He said because we blocked off the entrance that the raccoons were now stuck in the attic and probably had babies up there that were disoriented and could have fallen down in between our walls. He said he knows how to remove them in the best way possible and would advise us to tell our friends to call him first if they ever have problems like ours. We felt really bad. We really had no idea.

Luckily, he was able to go in and remove the mother raccoon and found four babies. The worst part was that one of the babies had fallen down between our bedroom and bathroom walls. If we had not called the raccoon removal specialist we would be looking for weeks and weeks for the decaying body.
