Rabid skunks and raccoons in Hartford Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Wildlife Division has warned against the danger of the growing number human-animal conflicts in Connecticut. One of the biggest dangers of encounters between humans and wildlife is the very real possibility of disease. Rabies, in particular, is relatively common in Connecticut and a number of people in the Hartford area have had to undergo painful and expensive rabies treatments in the past few years. Common animals carrying and/or transmitting rabies include: bats, skunks, raccoons and squirrels.

If you want to keep your pets and family safe, I suggest that you make sure your pets are vaccinated. Teach your children (and yourself) to be alert if you see bats, skunks or raccoons, in particular, out in the middle of the day and acting strange. Not every daytime sighting of a raccoon means it is a rabid raccoon, but you should certainly be more careful. Same with skunks. Just because you see it out at noon doesn't mean you should panic, but you should consider the possibility that it is a rabid skunk.

Additional symptoms you should be aware of that can indicate a rabid skunk or rabid raccoon include: unprovoked aggression, paralysis, lack of coordination, disorientation, unusually friendly or unafraid behavior around humans. If you see this type of behavior in an animal, avoid all contact and contact a wildlife control operator as soon as possible. You can help to make sure you family is safe from rabies by not allowing wild animals such as skunks and raccoons to take up residence on your property.

Hartford, along with the rest of Connecticut, does not allow skunks or raccoons to be relocated when they are removed from your property. This is an important safety precaution for people, pets and other wildlife. Urban wildlife has a higher instance of disease than their rural cousins and removing the raccoon or skunk from your property and taking it out of town causes disease to spread.

Skunks and raccoons are common nuisance animals in Connecticut and there have been numerous cases of Rabies confirmed in wild animals captured in the Hartford Area since 1993. Don't fall victim to a rabid raccoon or rabid skunk on your property. Be aware. Be careful.

We solve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Hartford and surrounding areas. Give us a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

Many of the projects we solve involve raccoon families in attics and chimneys, mud swallow nests on stucco, woodpeckers drilling siding, voles and gophers destroying lawns, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, bat infestations, skunks stealing pet food and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their noise and commotion and smell. Baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that my professional wildlife removal operators and I are prepared to solve.

Not only do my technicians and I trap and remove problem wild animals, we do a lot of other dirty work, too. Don't hesitate to call us for dead animal removal, pigeon waste cleanup, bat guano removal, mouse droppings, decontamination, repairs, above ground and below ground rodent slick fencing, odor control for skunk spray, and the like. We are a full service pest control company with a wide range of animal control solutions.

I have been in the professional wildlife control business for many years. My favorite stories and experiences are removing bats from schools and churches.

Hartford, CT Pigeon Problem

I am a breeder of fancy pigeons near Hartford, Connecticut. I guess you could say that I love the birds, most of the time. But, the building where I work is covered with pigeons and their mess and I can't stand that. It isn't safe. It stinks. They really need to get rid of pigeons.

This is what has happened. Unfortunately, some irresponsible breeders turn birds loose when they don't look or act the way they want them to. These birds add to the overwhelming numbers of wild pigeons around and, as they have no fear of people, they are especially bold and attracted to human habitation.

The air conditioning unit on top of the building has turned into a roost. There are nests all around it and the poop drips down on the air intake. So, everyone in the building is breathing filth all day long. I am really surprised that no one has become sick yet.

Breathing bird feces and bird feather dust all day is not good for your health. People could come down with Chlamydia or Hypersensitive pneumontis or any of a number of fungal infections. When I clean my coops I always wear a surgical mask and rubber gloves, but at work…well, it certainly would look odd.

I hate to be a "whistle blower" but I have contacted the boss and told him that it is time to get rid of pigeons before they get rid of some employees and he has a lawsuit on his hands. He acted surprised, like he didn't know what was going on or didn't think it was all that serious.

I hope he does take it seriously, because I do. I love my birds, but I know that it is time for the bums on the roof to go. It isn't hard to get rid of pigeons if you get professional help. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection urges business owners or private individuals with wild animal problems to contact a wildlife removal operator. These guys know how to get rid of pigeons and give you back a healthier life.
