Bat Removal Needs in Douglas County, Colorado

In general, bats are a real blessing to Douglas County, Colorado. However, when they move into homes and businesses, bat removal is necessary. Colorado has a lot of natural habitat and additional sanctuary habitat, such as abandoned mines, and you do not have to share your home or commercial space with these winged wonders.

Sometimes, though, people need bat removal without realizing it, until it becomes a dangerous emergency.

One customer, Barbara, was roused from sleep by something brushing her face. It turned out to be a bat that was crawling across her bed. The bats found in Colorado are not vampire bats, but they will bite to defend themselves if they are startled, and this bat was definitely startled almost as badly as Barbara.

The bat was in her room because it had come down through a can-light trim from the attic where it lived. The colony had been there for a few years. Barbara had used a lot of air fresheners to cover the musty, musky smell in her home without seriously investigating where the smell was coming from. Due to work schedules, she was rarely in her yard at dawn or dusk and hadn’t observed them coming and going from the louver vent in the back of her home. She was living in a bat house and didn’t know it.

But, now that she did know it, bat removal was an immediate priority. As the colony was only about 30 individuals and it was a time of the year when we didn’t have to worry about vulnerable baby bats being injured or left behind, we were able to complete the bat removal very quickly. With a thorough clean up and repairs to make sure the animals couldn’t return, we got rid of the bats in the most complete way possible.

The best part was a follow-up letter from Barbara about a month later: “You wouldn’t believe the difference in my home. I am a little embarrassed that I hadn’t investigated my problem sooner. I am saving a fortune in air fresheners! Next time, I will not ignore a smell or try to cover it up. Your bat removal is the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. PS-- The rabies test came back negative.”

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Douglas County, Colorado Woodpecker Control

You know all those jokes ab "How many (whatever) it takes to…" Well, I can tell you exactly how many woodpeckers it takes to ruin a Douglas County, Colorado neighborhood: ONE.

This last spring, my entire neighborhood was treated to an early morning wake-up call, at about 5:30am each day. It wasn't nearly as pleasant as a bugle, or even as traditional as a rooster. It was a single note hammered into our heads, worse than Chinese Water Torture: up-up-up-up-up-up (slight pause) up-up-up-up-up-up. Well, guess what? I didn't want to be up-up-up at that hour and neither did much of anyone else. We needed to control woodpeckers and get a woodpecker control plan that would get rid of the bird and all that noise.

The first idea was to just shoot the stupid creature. However, that is illegal in more than one way. Lethal woodpecker control requires a federal permit and you aren't supposed to discharge firearms in this part of Douglas County.

I started researching woodpecker control methods and found out that we should do something right away. The longer a bird is allowed to live in a particular territory, the more attached he becomes to it. And, it won't be just one bird for long. All that drumming is partly designed to attract a mate and there will be two birds and then babies and then….you get the idea.

So, we needed to act quickly. We discovered that we could hire a professional who had all the equipment, plus experience in woodpecker control. There were eight of us in the neighborhood who really wanted to get rid of the bird. With that many in on the deal, the cost wasn't bad at all. Way less than a therapist for all the mental damage the beast was causing. So, the guys showed up and the birds were dealt with and that was that.

I know that woodpecker control isn't always that easy. Sometimes dealing with one little bird is a big problem that has to go all the way to the Federal Government for a kill permit. I am glad we didn't have to go that route this time, but even if we had, it would have been worth it. Sometimes drastic measures are required when it comes to woodpecker control.
