Urban Raccoons in Chicago, Illinois

Coyotes, opossums, falcons, foxes and raccoons. Is this a nature preserve? Well, I guess it is—it is downtown Chicago. While urban living doesn’t suit all animals, some thrive in urban settings. Raccoons are a great example. They have adapted to city living so successfully that, on average, urban raccoons live longer than rural ones. They sometimes have a higher population concentration in urban areas than in surrounding areas. Unfortunately, being packed into an urban or suburban environment does create a lot of opportunities for conflict between these animal and their human hosts.

Raccoon removal is necessary when the animals invade homes, seeking out attics, garages, crawl spaces or decks as safe places to next and have their young. During the summer the young move about and the mothers teach them to forage. During this time you will occasionally see whole families of animals out and about in search of food.

Where do raccoons find food in Chicago? Food is everywhere. Garbage cans, pet food, picnic scraps, and bird feeders are all food sources. Eliminate the food and you eliminate a reason for the animals to come onto your property.

Keep them off your property and they will never be tempted to move into your house. Cozy attics, warm chimneys, quiet crawl spaces and secure garage rafters all look a lot like hollow trees or small caves and are perfect places for baby raccoons to be safe and secure while mom is out gathering the next meal.

Careful building maintenance will help, but a very determined animal will make their own access by tearing off soffit, ripping loose siding and pulling off vents.

If you do get an animal in your house, you should call for raccoon removal right away. The longer the animal is there the worse the damage will be. These animals are not tidy and carry a number of diseases. Studies have shown that, on average nationally, urban wildlife populations have a higher disease rate than their rural counterparts.

There are some very fine wildlife control operators in the Chicago area. They have experience working with urban wildlife and treat the animals in a humane way, following good sense and local, state and federal law governing their capture, relocation or euthanization. If you need raccoon removal, you have come to the right place. We can help you.

Peregrine Pigeon Control in Chicago, IL

I was passing through Chicago on business a few years ago and received an invitation to dinner at the Signature Room, a very fine restaurant located on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building. My friend told me to expect "dinner and a show," but when I arrived at the restaurant and looked around, I didn't see a stage. I was given a table by the windows and was amazed at the view—I could see Lake Michigan and even discern the curvature of the earth from my bird's-eye view.

I ordered dinner, and was looking around when a flash caught my eye. It was a peregrine falcon flying less than 10-feet away from the window. As the bird went past it sucked its wings against its body in a stance known as a stoop as it prepared to dive. It disappeared so fast I couldn't follow it with my eye. What I was able to see, several hundred feet below, was a flock of pigeons flying by. A few seconds later I saw what appeared to be a puff of smoke or small explosion. The falcon had hit a pigeon and feathers were flying everywhere. Now I knew what the show was! Mother Nature at her finest.

But the show wasn't over. A few minutes later the falcon reappeared at my altitude at the 95th floor with the pigeon clutched in its talons. It was as though the falcon was showing off what she had captured. One of the most impressive sites I have ever seen.

After visiting with people in Chicago I learned that there are several mating pairs of peregrines in Chicago that are an important part of downtown pigeon control plans. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service delisted the birds from the Endangered Species List in 1999 due to the recovery of the species. But, there still aren't enough falcons to deal with the whole pigeon problem and parts of the city are overrun with these birds.

If you need pigeon control and don't happen to have peregrine falcons in your neighborhood, you can still get rid of the unwanted birds by calling a wildlife control operator. Get a good guy from the Allstate Animal Control directory and, while it won't be as good a show as I got, you will get rid of the pigeons.
