Naughty Raccoon Babies in Weber County, UT

“I think my house is haunted!” So many calls start out this way, and most of the time it turns out to be raccoon babies. That was the case with this older home in Weber County, Utah.

The owner called and said she felt silly calling me about animals when she was half-convinced it was ghosts, but her husband said it wouldn’t hurt to have an inspection. He thought it sounded like maybe a dog in the attic, but she was certain that no dog was there, or even could get up there. From her description of sounds and noises like small boys having a wrestling party I was certain raccoon babies were having a ball while mama was away.

We scheduled an inspection for the next day, but before I could even arrive at the home I got a second call from the owner. “You have to get here now!” she said. “Something has happened and there is an animal, or ghost, trying to tear my house down.” Oh no, I thought, a naughty baby has fallen into a tight spot and mama is determined to save him.

Sure enough, while mama was out feeding during the night, the babies were having a very noisy party. Similar to human children, raccoon babies like to play and they have a great time whenever mom is gone. They throw big parties and in the process sometimes get themselves in a bad place—down a wall cavity, for example. Mom returns and finds a crying baby in a hole. Well, this mama was determined to save the day and had become extremely aggressive trying to reach her child. The insulation was torn loose. Wires were yanked out of the places. Chunks were torn out of drywall.

We were able to spook the mama away and reach down into the wall with a noose type device to reach around the baby’s body and lift it out. The family was reunited and later confined to a trap and removed from the house.

If you start hearing noises in your attic or chimney, call us. It might be a ghost. It might be a dog. But, it is probably a raccoon setting up housekeeping. Spring is the time for raccoon babies to be born and to start getting in trouble. Let us help you before it becomes an emergency.

Weber County Cities May Allow Residents To Shoot Raccoons

Pleasant View and other Weber County cities are considering altering city ordinances to allow residents to shoot raccoons.  Raccoons are causing a lot of problems in Weber County, damaging homes, destroying gardens, threatening pets and strewing garbage all over.  Harrisville recently amended its ordinance to allow residents to use firearms to kill pest animals, but other city’s officials and residents are concerned that allowing people to shoot at pest animals will end up putting more humans and property in danger.

Bats in a Farmhouse in Plain City

My name is Halley. My husband Jeff and I are renters in the Plain City area. We have only been married a few months and have enjoyed the little farmhouse that we are renting until now. Now we have a huge bat problem.

Our landlord said that he would knock our rent down each month if we would help with some improvements to the house. Jeff is quite a handyman and so some months we haven’t even had to pay rent from all of the improvements he has made. We put in a new tile floor in the kitchen and dining room area, painted all of the rooms, and updated the tile and vanity in the one bathroom. It has been a lot of fun.

Well, the other evening, Jeff was working on an upstairs dormer window that goes into the attic and there appeared to be a hole in it. He was nearly knocked off the ladder he was on when in a five minute period fifteen bats exited through the hole in the wood!

We had noticed a terrible smell in the house. We thought at first that it was the bathroom, so we renovated it, but the smell did not go away.

We also noticed some staining on the ceiling in our bedroom and so we thought that maybe it was from water damage that was coming through a part of the dormer, but as Jeff got up there to inspect the damage, he was blown away. It wasn’t water damage on the ceiling! It was urine.

We called our landlord and within a few days, a professional bat removal technician came out and inspected the house. He made sure that the bats were only coming in and out of the hole in the dormer and sealed up any other possible sites.

He vented out the bats over several days, replaced the rotting sheetrock in the ceiling and cleaned out all of the waste from the bat colony. What a terrible ordeal!
