Swallows in Tooele, County Utah

It was six or seven years ago that the Calhoun family had their first run in with swallows on their home.  It started off as one nest, tucked neatly away under the overhang of the roof.  They didn\'t think twice about it, birds had built nests around the home before and all they had to do was wait until the birds had left for the season and knock it down.  They didn\'t usually come back and that would be the last of it.

These birds, however, didn\'t do that.  Once the birds had left their small, mud nest for the season, they knocked the nest down and that was that.  Except it wasn\'t.  The next year while enjoying cool lemonade on the back porch, they noticed that the nest was back.  Upon further investigation, they discovered that there wasn\'t just one nest, but two!  The next day there were three!

They decided that the best line of attack was to knock the nests down, but when they got up on a ladder to check the nests, they discovered that two of the three already had eggs in them!  So the plan adjusted, they knocked down the empty nest and left the other two standing.  Knowing that swallow nests are protected once eggs are inside of them, they waited until the other nests were empty before removing them.

Unfortunately, every year after that, more and more swallows nest were popping up everywhere! Not only on the house, but on the garage too.  It was definitely becoming a problem, especially when the noticed the small bugs that crawled out of the debris from almost every nest knocked down!  The birds and bugs were just too much for them to handle on their own, so they called us in.

We, of course, had a little bit more experience with swallows than the Calhoun\'s did.  We know that timing is everything with these little birds and if you don\'t get it right, they (and their friends) will return year after year after year after year...

So we did what we had to, set up the proper equipment, took the proper steps, and viola!  The birds were gone!  \"After all of these years,\" Mr. Calhoun said.  \"I can\'t believe they made it look so easy!\"

Swallow removal can be difficult, especially because they\'re federally protected birds!  Luckily, we know just the right tricks to get rid of them.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

It was bad enough having a teenager that wanted to stay out all night, but one morning I woke up to the sound of birds, very loud birds, outside of my bedroom window.  At the time, I was trying to, how do they say it, \"get in touch with nature\"?  I\'d been doing yoga and meditation and hiking, mostly trying to find things to calm me down when my daughter stresses me out to the max.  So instead of screaming at the birds, I did a deep breathing exercise, and went back to sleep.

Or....not. Apparently these birds have the same minds as babies do.  Once they\'re up, they\'re up, and you\'d better be too.  I figured it was nature\'s way of telling me to get a head start on the day, so I got up and made some coffee.  I\'ll tell you, that first day I really thought those birds were a blessing.  But, it turned out that they were most definitely NOT.  They were a curse!

When I heard them screeching away outside of my window the next morning, I took a few deep breaths and went outside to investigate. What I found was NOT miracle birds sent to wake me up and prepare me for the day, but (what I later discovered were) swallows building a nest on the overhang of my house!  They weren\'t there to prepare me for a hard day, they were trying to move in!

I climbed up on a ladder as fast as I could -which I\'ll admit wasn\'t very fast- and knocked down every last one of the small, mud nests they were building.  I thought that would be the end of it but the next morning, I woke up to the same loud chirping, and more nests! I could not believe it!  And the worst part was that when I went out to knock them down again, there were eggs in them!  I\'m no egg smasher, so I left them be.  They may have lost the battle, but I was going to win the war!

I knew that the most important part of war was knowing your opponent, so I started doing my research.  That\'s when I found out that the birds were swallows, which are federally protected (good thing I didn\'t kill the eggs, huh?). I also found out that they would migrate back to the same spot every year!  Over my dead body!

Well I was not going to let them win this one! I figured the best way to get rid of them was to have someone else do it.  Okay, okay, I just didn\'t want to lose anymore sleep to these birds!  But the people I called are top of the line professionals...I hope.  They\'ll come out and deal with the problem once the babies have left the nest!
