Raccoon Wreck in Spokane County, Washington

I always knew that raccoons were a problem, but I didn\'t realize how big of a problem that they could be!  I\'ve seen them in my backyard and around the neighborhood in the past, but until my neighbor found them in his attic, I had never seen or heard of anything like this; and I\'ve been alive for a long, long time.

About six months ago, my neighbors Jim and Angie found a raccoon in there attic, like I said.  I try to mind my own business, but Ang was so frustrated with the situation that she told me all about it when we bumped into each other at the market! Anyway, back on subject.

Apparently, against Angie\'s advice, Jim had decided that instead of calling in a professional to remove the raccoon from the attic, that he would do it himself.  He scoured the roofline to find an entrance, and spotted one tucked in the corner of a dormer by the master bedroom. Well in his mind, the perfect solution was right there.  Instead of trying to force the raccoon out of the attic, he would just seal the entrance then and there!

Well let me tell you, his plan worked perfectly.... until it didn\'t.

It turns out that this raccoon wasn\'t alone in there at all; it was actually a mother that had five babies! I know if I was a mom and some guy trapped me and my kids inside of a dark attic, I would be restless to get out.  Not only for some fresh air, but also to get food for my kids!  Well it turns out my motherly instinct was just as good as hers was because that is exactly what she did.

The problem here was that there was no exit for her.  When he sealed of her entrance he sealed off the only entrance.  Unfortunately, that did NOT stop her.  Since she couldn\'t go out, she went down; literally.  She dug through the ceiling into the house!  From there, it was a disaster.  She brought her little ones down into the kitchen and they went crazy.  Opening cupboards and boxes, they tore through everything!

By the time Jim got home and saw what had happened it was too late!  The damage had been done and all he could do was clean it up.  Well after six months, the last truck has finally pulled out of there driveway.  What a fiasco!  If I find raccoons, I\'m going to get them out before they get themselves out!

We resolve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Spokane County and surrounding areas. Give me a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? A Surfeit of Skunks in Spokane County, Washington

In Spokane County, seeing skunks is not an uncommon thing.  In fact, seeing large families of skunks isn’t either; usually a mother will have about 4-6 kits and they will follow her around.  However, seeing large groups of skunks that aren’t babies, that is an odd sight.

Working on a job in Spokane, we were investigating a mystery animal that was eating our customer’s garden.  Even though there was the occasional skunk smell in the air, I didn’t suspect skunks at first because of all the damage being done.  It was obvious to me that there was more than one animal in this garden and that all of the animals were full grown.

Knowing that skunks usually were found in groups of one or two or with several small young, I absentmindedly dismissed them as the problem animals and instead looked towards raccoons or even rabbits.  I was more leaning towards raccoons because of their scavenger nature and the fact that they often get into tussles with skunks, which would account for the smell that was often lingering around the yard.

I was very wrong.  I didn’t know it, however, until I watched a skunk run from the garden and behind the shed.  Then, I figured out exactly who and where the culprit was.  Of course I wasn’t just going to stick my head underneath the shed, I have never been sprayed by a skunk and I wasn’t going to start then.  Instead, I used a trail camera to see exactly what I was dealing with, but I was not expecting what I saw.

Instead of the typical mom and babies, I found a total of nine skunks (yep, I said nine).  Which has to be something of a record for skunks living together!  What was incredible was that they were all full grown, not a mom and kits.
