Many people, especially during this time of the year, find their homes being invaded by bats.  Here is a story that comes from a man that lives in Sanpete County, Utah and has been experiencing an extreme bat problem.

 

I knew that there were bats in my neighborhood before I started renting this house.  You can go sit outside and watch them fly by in the hunt for insects.  I\\\'ve never minded the high population of bats because it has kept our mosquito population down which is always a plus. 

I first noticed the problem about a year ago. Or I guess I should say my granddaughter noticed my problem.  She had reached the age where she loves to see old photos and she asked me if I had any of her grandmothers photos.  I told her that some of the old scrapbooks were up in the attic and that she could get them, if she\\\'d like.  I led her to the drop down ladder that goes to the attic and gave her directions to the box of books and photos.  As I pulled down the hatch, we were lightly covered in what I thought was dust.  She crawled carefully up into the attic and found the box I had told her about.

When she came down, she asked me kindly if she could go back up and play with my hamsters.  Surprised by her question, I told her I didn\\\'t have any hamsters.  She didn\\\'t even hesitate to ask, \\\"then what are those fuzzy things hanging in the attic?\\\". At first I thought she was talking about mice, but as I peeked up into the attic, I saw about 20 small, brown bats hanging from the eaves.

Realizing then what the animals were and that we had just been covered in guano I quickly ushered my granddaughter into the shower and a clean change of clothes.

After that, the problem only got worse.  I thought that by leaving the bats alone, I wouldn\\\'t have any more troubles and that when it started to cool off that they would leave.  In the months leading up to the winter I started to hear noises coming from the attic but as the snow fell and the temperatures dropped the sounds seemed to die down. 

Now the problem has quadrupled in size.  I started hearing sounds from the attic again about 2 months ago and they were much louder than before.  The bats seemed to be more active, and they were.  But not only were they more active, there were also about 400 more than I thought!

One night as I sat outside with my granddaughter to bat watch, I hear small thumps on the side of my house.  As I turned around to see what the noise was, I was shocked to see hundreds of small bats flying out from the vent in my attic! 

Now I\\\'m just looking for someone to get rid of them.  I know that they are beneficial to the environment, but I also know how hazardous they can be especially to young children.  I\\\'m hoping we can get this problem resolved soon!

Skunks in Sanpete County, Utah

We strongly advise against following the example of the customer in this story.

My husband and I live in Fountain Green, Utah, where we have an acre of land and a small sheep barn where I keep my chickens, cat, and the feed for all of my animals.  I also have a raccoon problem.  Feed nowadays is expensive so losing cups of it every night to a couple of shifty raccoons is very frustrating.  I tried to tell my husband that we should call someone, but he insisted that he could remove them himself and once a man has his mind set on something, there\'s not much you can do.

So I let him take over.  I didn\'t say anything about the cages he bought from home depot, I tried not to step on his ego as he baited the traps with leftovers, and I even checked the traps for him in the mornings when I let my chickens out.

Unfortunately, none of this stopped him from being irritated after two weeks with no luck.  I had just about had it, I was still losing money with all of the feed that they were stealing; but I tried to stay positive and supportive (not an easy task).  I tried to give him some advice.  I told him to put the traps inside of the barn instead of around the outside entrances, I also reluctantly told him that he should probably sprinkle some of the feed inside of the trap. After a pep talk, he was completely rejuvenated on the idea of being his own version of Bear Grylls. 

The next morning I got up and followed my usual routine. Let the dog out, quick breakfast, slip on mud boots, let the chickens out, and feed the animals; and of course check the traps.  What was different about this morning was that the usually empty cages weren\'t empty, and there weren\'t any raccoons.

When I stepped into the barn, I smelled him before I saw him.  The second I saw the black and white skunk sitting in the trap looking at me, I walked quickly back out of the barn.  I woke my husband up and dragged him out to deal with our newfound problem.

He had no idea what he should do with the skunk.  I suggested again that we call someone with experience at this, but his pride would never let him call someone else.  Instead he came up with the worst plan in the world.  To walk up to the skunk, and cover it with a tarp so he couldn\'t see out and then carry him out of the barn.

Knowing what was inevitably going to happen, I put my dog on the leash and moved as far away from the barn doors as I could without losing a visual.  I watched him walk slowly towards the skunk, I watched him stop abruptly, and I watched the animal turn around, raise his tail, and spray. 

Luckily, the tarp took the worst of it and he was able to cover the cage, but he still reeked and there was no way I was letting him sleep in our bedroom until the skunk was completely washed out of his skin.  Also, I was burning his clothes.
