Litchfield County Connecticut Bats Still Shouldn’t Live in Houses

In spite of dropping bat populations in Litchfield County, Connecticut and other areas in the Northeast, these flying mammals still seek out shelter in houses and businesses from time to time. It will not further damage the population to perform humane bat removal and property owners should not feel guilty for wanting to get rid of bats on their property.

Starting in 2008, so-called white nose syndrome, a mysterious illness associated with a white fungus that grows on the animals’ noses, eyes and ears, started killing large numbers of bats in Connecticut. Not much is yet known about the illness, but scientists and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection are working hard on the problem. Bats are crucial to the health of our environment and critical to plans to stop the spread of mosquito borne illnesses like West Nile Virus.

At the same time, if wild animals take up residence in your attic or walls, it isn’t necessary to allow them to stay. Humane bat removal is a careful, multi-step process that coaxes them to leave an area and find a new roosting location for the colony. Connecticut is full of ideal bat sites besides your attic. We do not force animals out and abandon their babies to starvation. That would be illegal, inhumane and environmentally unsound. We treat bats with the care and respect they deserve while maintaining the rights of the property owner to live in a home without contamination caused by unwelcome wild animals.

Look for signs of a colony in your structure: Do you see a large number of animals flying at dusk? Have you noticed an unpleasant smell similar to gerbils developing in your home? Have you heard small scratching and squeaking sounds that aren’t mice? Is there staining similar to that caused by a roof leak in your ceiling, but no leak? If so, you may need bat removal.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? Feral Cats in Litchfield, CT

What do you do when wild animals aren't really wild animals? I have never wondered what to do if I saw a raccoon or something like that on my property, but in the past few years wild or feral cats have started lurking around the edge of my property where it backs up to some woods. There are at least 6-10 animals living there now and I want to get rid of feral cats before they get rid of all the birds I feed and enjoy watching.

I have 8 different feeders throughout my backyard and have always enjoyed the year-round companionship of many different species of bird. Then I noticed that fewer birds were coming around. I wasn't filling the feeders nearly so often. Then I noticed the cats—shy, sly, ghost-like creatures that flit around and dart along the edge of the trees. I am certain they are responsible for the decline in birds. I find feathers from time to time and have recorded a 40% drop in feeder visits.

There are animal shelters all over Litchfield County. So, where did these cats come from? Well, I have discovered that they come from irresponsible pet owners that do not spay or neuter their animals. The animals accidently, or more often on purpose, are dropped in the wild and have to do their best to survive there. Nature takes its course, and there are more creatures every year.

You can't get rid of feral cats by scaring them away. Nothing really scares them, long term. They dart away for a moment, then are back again. The ones on my property can't really be called house cats. They aren't even alley cats. They are tough, wild creatures that avoid people and anything to do with them, except food.

I tried feeding them, thinking they would leave the birds alone if their stomachs were full. It didn't work. Maybe they just hunt because it is a habit, but the birds haven't returned.

The only long-term solution for this problem is more responsible pet ownership, but in the meantime there is help available in Litchfield County to get rid of feral cats. Wildlife Control Operators have the knowledge and expertise to humanely trap the animals and take them to shelters where they can be cared for.
