Raccoon Problems cause distress in Jackson County, Michigan

Residents of Williamston, Michigan are upset by raccoon invaders and their damage:

About 3 - 4 weeks ago it sounded like a bird or squirrel was stuck in the wall of our house. Occasionally, scratching / movements were heard, as well as a crying-type of animal noise, usually in the same area of the wall. Over the next days, movements/crawling were heard in the area between our downstairs and upstairs. A few days later, we saw a raccoon on our fence and realized this must be the animal. The noises were getting louder and sounded like a bigger animal than originally thought. We observed all possible places around the roof and home and garage that we thought could have allowed the animal entrance. A couple days later after my husband had mowed the backyard, he was sitting at the back of our yard and from that distance and angle, he saw a shingle missing from our patio cover and realized this must be how the animal got in, and now, it appears to be gnawing away at the shingle next to the missing one. We\\\'ve set a cage out with cat food inside it, tried Critter Ridder, sawed off a branch of a tree next to the patio cover, thinking it would not be able to get back up on to the patio cover. All with no success. There are now scratching noises, banging and rattling noises, during the day and evening. I believe that it must have also chewed at some plumbing because the jets on my upstairs jacuzzi tub will not come on. I need help before I go nuts, trying to figure out what to do next. We are leaving on vacation in 12 days, and do not want to come home to more serious problems! I really need your help! Kelly S.

There’s a raccoon in the crawlspace underneath my living room.  I haven’t seen it but I know that’s what’s down there.  There’ve been raccoons in my neighborhood for as long as I can remember, and one is living under my house.  I would like if it was gone and soon.

Questions about Bird Removal

I have a bird problem in one of the exhaust vents to my home. I am not certain whether they are starlings or pigeons since I haven\'t actually seen them, but those two bird types are very prominent in my neighborhood. My brother removed the nests once the year before last but it is worse now. I can hear them all night. So I am interested in their removal, cleaning out the area, and a way to block their future entry.

One of the main problems that you face when birds begin to nest inside of a structure is bird mites and other insects that can live in the nests.  Depending on the type of bird it is possible to trap them and remove them from the structure; of course, you also have to worry about any eggs or baby birds that could still be in the nest.  Nest removal and clean-up is fairly easy so long as there is easy access to the area inside of the exhaust vent.  On top of that, however, you will also want the area disinfected and sprayed for bird mites.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. What kinds of rodents invade homes in Jackson County, Michigan?

Residents of Williamston, Michigan seek information and answers for their rodent problems:

At night, my husband and I have been hearing a gnawing sound that comes from either the attic or an exterior wall. I believe we have a rodent problem. Cara R.

Looking for someone to clean up rodent feces and urine in breezeway ASAP. Ugh! What a mess. Sara M.

My family and I live a double wide trailer in Michigan. We are having a severe mouse and rat problem. We have tried store bought traps and they don\'t work. Please help. Gloria S.

I’m not sure what kind of animal is in my attic but there’s something.  I can hear walking and scratching both during the day and occasionally at night.  I think it might be rats or squirrels but I’m not sure.  I’m afraid to go up and look around just in case they’re aggressive.

-Jordan J.

When I moved into my new house I found a rat skeleton under the floor.  I didn’t hear anything that sounded like a living rat until 2 weeks ago.  They’ve started to chew and scurry around the walls around 1-3 am.  They’re driving me crazy and keeping me awake.

-Clarissa T.

I\'ve lived in this run down cabin for 40 plus years, and from time to time we\'d have a mouse problem but I\'d set some traps and catch a few and then it\'d be over. This year, starting in the fall, we’ve had a lot more issues.  One night a bat flew through our living area which had only happened once before about 25 years ago. Since then there has been an increasing amount of activity in the few walls that have studs in them.  There is no foundation to speak of underneath my house and I\'m disabled and can\'t afford to lift the house and have one poured. Whatever it is, it sounds like it could be two maybe three different critters. There\'s the gnawing, chewing, running and what sounds like fluttering of wings. There isn’t much mouse or bat poop that I’ve found but they\'ve chewed through the drywall in the middle of the room and through the flooring by the shower. I spoke to an extermination business and was told to eliminate their entry & food source but I can only eliminate the food source. Any suggestions? –Clark B.
