Don’t Disturb the Dead: Raccoons in Greene County, OH

There is no such thing as “off limits” to wildlife, if they can find protection and food it’s free game to them.  We are used to getting calls about animals in weird places; furnaces, cupboards, even sewer systems – we do it all.  The weirdest place we’ve been called to, or maybe the creepiest place, was a mortuary.  We got a call from the groundskeeper who refused to keep working there until someone had taken care of the problem, apparently he had found feces on the dining table on several different occasions.  So I went and checked out the area to find out what was going on.

It didn’t take me long to see how the animals were getting in, it’s actually a pretty common thing.  The landscapers had been mowing very close to the edge of the marble building and any rocks or weed trimmers that hit it had slowly broken away the bottom foundation of the building, leaving some sizeable access points for animals.  This also helped me identify the nuisance animals: raccoons. It looked like they were using those gaps to get inside of the mortuary, down in the room where they store the bodies.

My team had to go in and clean out all the fecal matter we could find, which ended up being a lot, and start trapping for the raccoons.  We were able to find the nest fairly quickly (and luckily it was not around ANY dead bodies), all the fecal matter seemed to surround a fairly central area neat a maintenance closet.  So we tapped on some of the ceiling tiles, listened, and sure enough there was something up there!  Luckily, the removal of the raccoons went fairly quickly too and in about two weeks we had the building cleaned, sealed, and raccoon free.  While everyone was happy about how smoothly things went, it was definitely eerie and not something I’d like to do regularly.

We resolve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Greene County and surrounding areas. Give me a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that I and my professional wildlife removal operators are prepared to solve.

Not only do my technicians and I trap and remove problem wild animals, we do a lot of other dirty work, too. Ancient Hiss-tory: Snakes in Greene County, OH

How many snakes does it take to fill a hole? Too many.  In the early days of Barnes Wildlife Control, we received a call from a woman that claimed she had an enormous snake den underneath her backyard.  It seemed a little farfetched but we went to check it out.  When we got there she told us her story; she said that her dog would go dig in the backyard, and pull snakes out of the ground and leave them on her deck.  Every day it was a new snake, she was absolutely sure of it.  The dog made her story seem a little bit more plausible, but we weren’t sure that A: it wasn’t just little garner snakes that the dog was finding, and that B: we would be able to find any signs of snakes or a den in her huge backyard.  Despite both of these doubts, we set to work.

She took us to the area where her dog was usually digging and requested that we checked there first.  I explained that we might not find anything but she said she had to try something, so we started to probe the ground with snake tools for a sign of a den.  Surprisingly, we came across a large area fairly quickly, so we dug up a small area and could not believe what we had found.  When we shone our flashlights down into the shallow hole you couldn’t tell where one snake ended and another started, the whole ground seemed to be writhing.

It took a couple of hours, but eventually we removed every last one we could find, which ended up totaling over 50.  Many of the snakes were over 2 feet, too.  Even if it was hard to admit, our guess was way off on this job, but we were still glad we went.
