Fairies in Fairfield?

When we say 24/7, we mean it.  So when we got a call at 1 a.m. from a mother who\'s daughter had a \'fairy\' in her room, we were up and ready to go.  Although we were a little confused by the reported animal, we didn\'t hesitate to pack everything we could think of!  When we got there we found a small bat, hanging from the edge of the little girl\'s lamp; with the way the lighting was shining on it, it really looked like a little fairy! We were a little disappointed that there were no mythical creatures to be found, we were very happy to save the young damsel in distress.

Rabid Bat in Fairfield, Connecticut Home

Raccoons and bats take over an older home in Fairfield County

My mother\'s health is not very good. She is in her early 80s as she calls it (her mother lived to be 96) and has managed to live alone in the old farmhouse that has been in the family for generations. Up until the last few months, she has been extremely independent and stubborn. However, after a nasty fall, we need to have her come home to live with us so we can look after her. Without my knowledge, she has been sleeping on a foldout couch downstairs for the last two months because she cannot make it up the stairs anymore.

She has not wanted to leave her home where she raised her family. I understand somewhat as I grew up in that home and it carries many fond memories for me with its gabled roof, lattice work, and tall turret. This Victorian farmhouse was how I pictured the gingerbread house that Hansel and Gretel ate would look. It was a fun place to play hide and seek growing up with the slanted ceilings in the bedrooms and small half closets. I always imagined that there was a secret passage from the small bathroom that was once a closet to the fruit cellar below.

Although I absolutely love the home, it is in pretty bad shape, especially since my father passed away three years ago. Shutters are falling off, walls are cracking, and I can\'t remember the last time it had a fresh coat of paint. Now I am getting the home really to sell, and despite the many repairs required, I\'ve found many unwanted residents who seem to love the place. There is a colony of bats and a family of raccoons living on different sides of the attic.

There are so many cracks in the attic that I am not surprised how they have come to be there, but I have got to get them out of there. The raccoons have ripped up the attic level and nested into the old insulation. I know before I can begin any renovations on the home that I need to get these animals out of there as soon as possible.

I looked up a local wild animal control technician under animal control in the phonebook. He said that removing the bats and raccoons would not be a problem. He has completed hundreds of jobs for each.

First, he came out and surveyed the home and looked for all of the additional cracks where bats might get in after he removed them from the hole. Next he located a rip in one of the eaves where the raccoons were getting in and hooked up a trap right to the opening. He removed a large female raccoon and six babies.

He brought a system for the bats. He pushed a button and the air started to flow through it. Then he started removing the bats one by one with this sucking system. The bats were sucked out of the attic and then released outside. Finally he went in and cleaned up all of the waste products left over from the animals and pulled out the soiled insulation.

Now I am working with a general contractor to help me with the renovation of the home and we\'ve sealed off all the old cracks and openings. Once I restore the home to its glory, I am not sure I am going to want to sell it. I guess we\'ll see.
